Work process

The intersection between product design and management by Dan Winer
CC: Dan Winer.
I believe in focusing my efforts on the shared scope with PMs to produce more valuable work for users and businesses.

Where everything begins: understanding users, businesses, and the product ecosystem.

  • User research: interview users, analyze behaviors, and uncover pain points.
  • Business research: understand goals, strategies, and metrics critical to the business.
  • Product research: analyze product usage data to find problems and opportunities.
  • Market research: benchmark direct and indirect competitors for insights.

Defining the problem and generating impactful ideas.

  • Define and prioritize problems: use metrics to identify the most critical issues.
  • Generate solutions: brainstorm ideas, document them, and define success metrics.
  • Strategize: look to the horizons and understand if the solutions fit the big picture;
  • Prioritize ideas: ensure alignment with user needs, business goals, and technical feasibility.

Testing ideas before building.

  • Create low-fidelity prototypes: build simple mockups to validate key concepts.
  • Ensure feasibility: collaborate with developers to ensure technical viability.
  • Test with users: define success metrics, gather feedback, and iterate as needed.

Turning designs into reality.

  • Document requirements: maintain an up-to-date product requirement document and scope of work.
  • Develop high-fidelity prototypes: build detailed prototypes to guide development.
  • Conduct usability testing: test the interface with users and teammates to address issues early.
  • Handoff design: provide detailed specifications, videos, and annotations for developers.

Bringing the product to life.

  • Support coding: stay accessible to answer developer questions.
  • Track events: create a list of key interactions for analytics.
  • Quality assurance: verify design accuracy, performance, and responsiveness across devices.

Celebrate and communicate the launch.

  • Announce the release: use email, social media, and internal channels to spread the word.

Continuous improvement after launch.

  • Update documentation: revise flows, journeys, and other resources.
  • Evaluate success: analyze metrics against your original goals to inform future iterations.
